This summer, the presidential campaign began to heat up as the conventions concluded and candidates were officially announced. Democrats in Hamblen County were anxious to show their support. That is when the violence and destruction aimed at them began.
It began with stolen yard signs. Residents all over town saw their Biden/Harris yard signs disappear overnight. Larger signs, posted in public locations by the Hamblen County Democratic Party, were similarly stolen. John Litz, a local farmer, put a large sign in his field along route 11E. It was promptly destroyed. He then put up another large sign, atop a very large, sturdy poll. This lasted about a week before it too, was destroyed.
In early October thieves visited Hamblen County Democratic party headquarters and stole every sign on the front lawn. These included more than a dozen signs supporting Biden/Harris and Blair Walsingham. A few nights later, they came again and not only took all the yard signs but came onto the building's porch and cut down the large signs that were hanging there.
It was clear that things were escalating. There were threats on the party Facebook page to burn down the weekly popup tent. There was an unsettling visit to headquarters during which an individual verbally attacked and threatened one of the volunteers.
The violence has seriously escalated since the state GOP brought their "Road to Victory" rally tour to Morristown. That very night, Tuesday October 20, someone climbed up on one of the Biden/Harris billboards in town and slashed it up. Two days later, on October 22 at around 5pm, a pickup truck ran off the road onto the lawn at headquarters, smashing the building's permanent sign and causing a great deal of damage.
"The violence just gets worse and worse every day," said one HCDP volunteer. "When will it end? Will they stop at property damage? As the election gets closer and they get more desperate, how far will they go in their rage?"
The Morristown police are actively investigating both the billboard damage and the incident at headquarters. The HCDP is taking measures to make headquarters more safe including installing new cameras and making sure volunteers are not alone in the building.

On Friday, September 4th, the Hamblen County Democratic party held a "meet and greet your candidates" event. The event was very well attended. Area Democrats turned out masked and ready to meet our local Tennessee candidates on the November ballot. We spread across the lawn and shared a sense of hope for a better future. Electing these candidates could make that happen! Marquita Bradshaw is our Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, and Blair Walsingham is running for the District 1, House seat in Congress. Both candidates fully addressed any and all questions from our party members, and we will be detailing their responses and platforms in our October Newsletter. Get to know them. Visit their websites:
